Working out in your Charlottesville apartment

5 Tips for Home Workouts

Working out can be a real challenge to schedule and maintain. We all know that we should exercise regularly, but we never seem to find the time or energy. Here are a few tips to make your home workout a little easier!

1: Designate the Space
Devoting the space for a workout in an apartment can be challenging, but creating a space for a workout is a great way to stay motivated. Move your coffee table out of the way or slide your bed to one side of the room. Dedicating a space for exercise removes one excuse for missing workouts and reminds you to work out each time you see that designated space.

2: Schedule the Time
Plan your workout time and set a timer or a reminder to ensure that you stick to it. Working out before your daily shower is convenient and leaves you with a clean and refreshed feeling after your workout.  If you like to take a shower in the morning your workout can boost your energy level for your day. If you prefer to shower at the end of the day, exercise can help you sleep better through the night.

Investing in your own workout equipment reinforces your decision to start an exercise program. Start with something simple like a yoga mat or a set of hand weights, or buy what you need to follow your favorite online workout video. Gradually adding new workout equipment to your collection will help you to stay challenged and keep your workouts interesting.

4: Work Out with a Buddy
You can exercise with a friend even when you work out at home! Keep each other inspired with text messages, or use a webcam to exercise together from your separate homes. Your buddy can help you look forward to exercising as an opportunity to catch up with a friend rather than seeing it as a daily chore.

5: Make Privacy an Advantage
In the privacy of your own apartment, you can set up a workout video on your TV or computer and customize your workout to your preferences. Play any music you like without worrying about your headphones getting in the way. Wear anything you want to (or maybe nothing at all) and stop thinking about what you look like or if your leggings are see-through! Working out privately also boosts your confidence by allowing you to avoid feeling self-conscious as you improve your fitness.

Are you still struggling to find time to work out regularly? Multi-task when you do chores! Do squats while washing the dishes. Do knee-lifts while you vacuum or perform lunges while putting away laundry. Squeeze in a few strength moves while you perform household tasks to improve your fitness, save time, and enhance your sense of productivity. Using household chores to distract yourself from exercise can prevent the monotony associated with a daily workout.

There are so many ways to make working out in your apartment fun and enjoyable! Experiment and find out what works for you. At the end of the day, what matters is that you work out, not how you work out!
